New Jersey CannaBusiness Association (NJCBA) Executive Director Tara Sargente is set to launch a new course at Atlantic Cape Community College that will cover a wide array of information on cannabis. The course, “Cannabis 101: Essential Knowledge For A Growing Industry,” is part of a collaborative agreement between NJCBA and Atlantic Cape Community College announced earlier this year. The agreement is designed to help develop and support the College’s Cannabis Study academic programs for students and faculty.

“Cannabis is the fastest growing industry in the country, with adult-use sales in New Jersey projected to create 18,000 new jobs,” said Sargente. “We cannot ignore this massive new market. Those interested in getting involved in the field will need to be equipped with the right knowledge. This course is meant to provide that knowledge through an overview of the cannabis industry and the many opportunities it contains.”

The six-week course will begin Friday, October 11, 2019 and end on Friday, November 15, 2019. Sargente will start with a foundation of cannabis history and basic plant knowledge needed in any area of work. Next, she will discuss the current laws and where legalization is headed, then explore the cannabis supply chain and the plant-touching businesses in the “seed-to-sale” process.  This will cover what jobs might be available in the cannabis field and what is required in each of these unique areas of expertise: cultivation, processing, and dispensing. Finally, as cannabis is still a business like any other, Sargente will address the requirements and unique challenges of operating a facility in this space.

The course will offer online content to guide participants through the information on each topic. Two optional face-to-face sessions are available for participants to interact with their instructor.

“Cannabis 101: Essential Knowledge For A Growing Industry” is an adult continuing education/workforce development course, so anyone should feel free to register. Interested participants can contact Atlantic Cape Program Navigator Michele Matulevich at 609-343-5655.

New Jersey CannaBusiness Association (NJCBA) President Scott Rudder praised state lawmakers and New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy for passing and signing into law the “Jake Honig Compassionate Use Medical Cannabis Act,” which expands New Jersey’s medicinal cannabis program.

“This law will bring much-needed relief to thousands of New Jerseyans,” said Rudder. “The science is clear: medical cannabis is much more effective for patients than opioid or prescription drugs and does not create the horrible consequences of addiction.  This legislation will benefit patients by making medicinal cannabis more accessible and more affordable.  I want to thank Governor Murphy and legislative leadership for doing the right thing by those who desperately need this medicine. Today is a gigantic leap forward.”

Rudder also announced that the NJCBA will be hosting a workshop and educational seminar for would-be cannabis entrepreneurs. This event will provide information about the New Jersey Department of Health’s Request for Application process for the newest round of medical cannabis licenses. It will also help participants gain a better understanding of the new law and its implications.

This event will take place on Wednesday, July 10 from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. at the Rutgers University Inn and Conference Center, located at 178 Ryders Lane in New Brunswick.

Additional information about the event can be found here.

New Jersey CannaBusiness Association (NJCBA) President Scott Rudder issued the following statement today regarding legislation to legalize adult-use cannabis in New Jersey not moving forward in the legislature:

“This is a disappointing day but over the coming weeks and months the NJCBA and advocates across the state will continue to work on educating those who still doubt the numerous benefits of legalization. We believe we see light at the end of the tunnel and that it is a matter of when, not if.

“That said, the fact that we have gotten this far is historic. It is a testament to the amount of work put in by supporters, advocates and legislators. While we await a vote in the Senate and Assembly, we will continue to hope for expansion of the state’s medical program. Thousands of people suffering from a variety of ailments must have greater access to medical cannabis. NJCBA looks forward to working with advocates, the business community and the governor to ensure this happens.”
